Monitoring HP ProCurve switches natively with SCOM 2012: an utter disappointment

SCOM 2012 has greatly enhanced monitoring capabilities for network devices such as routers and switches. Adding network devices using SNMP works like a charm and is quite simple. However, some consideration is required how much information you can get out of these devices.

Microsoft has provided a list of network devices it supports which is available at the following location:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=26831

The Excel sheet provides filtering mechanisms to display the devices from one or more manufacturers. The devices listed provide extended monitoring capabilities in SCOM 2012. They will be labeled as ‘CERTIFIED’ in SCOM which is great.

HP ProCurve switches are nowhere to be found in this list, monitoring on these devices is very limited, actually only PING statistics and availability status can be retrieved from these switches. These switches will be labeled as ‘GENERIC’.

From a SCOM 2012 point of view, this is quite a disappointment. Extra Management Packs and labour are required to get some decent monitoring information from HP ProCurve switches…

SCVMM 2012: vSphere 5 support?

Hi everyone,

in my current project my objective was to use SCVMM 2012 in conjunction with SCOM 2012 to provide monitoring on hypervisors primarily and simplify administration secondarily.

Unfortunatley, SCVMM 2012 doesn’t support VMWare vSphere 5 at all.

Microsoft has stated the supported versions of VMWare on Technet:

http://technet.microsoft.com/library/gg697603.aspx

Despite that I tried to connect to a vCenter server in order to import the VMWare infrastructure, however this resulted in a complete crash of SCVMM 2012 and all functionality went down the drain…

So now I have to monitor the VMWare environment using the nWorks Management Pack from Veeam.

Why oh why, Microsoft, is VMWare vSphere support not included in SCVMM 2012.

I guess we need to wait until SP1.

So if you want to manage vSphere 5 with SCVMM 2012, just don’t.

It won’t work unfortunately…
